What I came up with for the Bright Young Things Style Challenger - go vote for your  favorite looks!

Last week I was invited to take part in a Style Challenge put together by Bright Young Things. The challenge was to style Elizabeth Starbuck's signature little black dress, none other than the one made famous by The Uniform Project.

The dress really goes with anything and can be worn in a myriad of ways, so styling it was not really that big of a challenge. I mean really, this piece is crazy-versatile as you can see from taking a look at all the challengers looks, the wear-a-thons on their site and of course, The Uniform Project's blog.

The challenge was super fun, and it was great to meet Eliza and the rest of the Bright Young Things team. I went nuts inside Cobblestones, which has been in the East Village for over 30 years and, as you might imagine, is chock-full of vintage treasures. A dangerous place for a vintage addict like myself! I kind of wanted to move in and make it my personal walk-in closet...

The insanity of so many wonderful choices went to my head, and I did a crazy thing tucking the dress into another dress with a fuller skirt, adding a belt, a lace capelet and a colorful handbag for one look– almost added a flowery hat too, thank god I resisted the urge! It ended up looking a little kooky and not in my favorite way, proving that dressing philosophy of 5-year-olds (where you wear everything you like, all together, all at once) is not really suited for adults. Hey, I tried.

So for my second look I kept the dress simple - just wore it with the buttons on the back, belted it with a simple black belt and piled on the jewellery. Because really, it's 100000 degrees here in NYC, I don't need to wear more clothes, I need to wear less clothes. When it comes to bangles, however, more is always better.

I also paired it with a few things I've been wearing to death this summer, like the YSL sunnies, my great-grandmother's necklace, &  Zara wedges. Then, not quite done with my 5-year-old instincts I put on every ring at Cobblestones that fit, plus an extra necklace and bangle...

It was so much fun to see what the other challengers picked, and see their finished looks. Everyone's style is so unique and fabulous! I especially liked Tiffany's looks, one with a pink Comme de Garçons skirt and a turban (you know how much I loooove turbans!) & another with a Victorian crochet camisole and vintage boater hat, which looked even better in person.

Special thanks to Janette of Fashion Loves People for introducing me to the Bright Young Things crew! Read Janette's interview with Eliza Starbuck, designer of Bright Young Things, to learn why her LBD is even more amazing than it looks.

Vote for all your favorites on Bright Young Things Facebook Page. Voters will be entered to win their very own LBD too!

    NOTE - To vote:

    1. Go to the Bright Young Things Facebook Page

    2. 'Like' the Bright Young Things page

  • CSA Full Share

Here at Market Publique we are all about the clothes. But we like other things too. One of those things is food. We loooove food. And we looove cooking, as you can probably tell by my occassional recipe posts and tweets about food.

One of our favorite things is being members of our CSA, Southside CSA. This group started last year, and this has been our second year as members with only rad things to say and recommend. Last year we only did a half veggie share (and I got my tricycle right in time to pick up the first delivery), but this year we amped things up and also got fruit and eggs.

One of our new 'member duties' as part of the voluteer work for CSA is writing a blog post about how we used our share throughout the week. Jon and I posted about it today, and thought maybe MP readers would also appreciate a peek into our daily lives.

Afterall, living sustainably, wether by eating local foods that support local small farmers or buying vintage clothes from independent sellers, is one of our main goals and philosophies. Enjoy and let us know your thoughts and ideas!

    CSA Full Share

Since this is our second year being members of the Southside CSA, we always know that Mondays we're in for a whole new dinner surprise.

We love to cook but don't have a lot of time, so we cook when we can. CSA is a good way to encourage ourselves to cook, which is something we really enjoy doing, especially with awesome, fresh, local ingredients.

We eat as local as we can, and we eat everything. If it has cheese or cream, we eat more of it. The only thing we don't eat is bananas, and Jon doesn't like cake or cookies (I know right?!).

    Chopped Lemongrass

Lemongrass was a new addition to the roster of CSA produce, so it was what inspired us to get cooking first.

    Lemongrass Lemonade

Since it was a big bunch, we made some lemongrass tea, using a recipe we found in Epicurious. It turned out a little too sweet for our taste, so when life gives you iced tea... make lemonade! We squeezed half a lemon into a glass of ice, topped it off with some lemongrass tea and garnished it with some fresh mint - voilá, lemongrass lemonade.

    Lemongrass Curry Shrimp

    Mango, Avocado & Squid Salad

Feeling refreshed, we decided to add some heat into the mix and start cooking dinner. We made green lemongrass curry with shrimp and a salad with one of the lettuces we got from the share, plus some mango, avocado, and sautéed squid.

    Kale and Bacon

We eat out a lot during the week, but we did manage to incorporate a lot of leftovers into our CSA delivery. One night was kale, sautéed with some leftover bacon from breakfast at Egg, accompanied by pan-fried skate and leeks.

    Sauteed Skate & Leeks

Since we still had eggs from our last pickup, we decided to use a bunch and make a caramelized onion tart. It was a huge hit, so I am including the recipe, adapted from a Williams-Sonoma cookbook.

    Egg Share

I recommend this recipe (or any quiche recipe) to use up any of your leftover veggies. You can make small tartlets and freeze them, and they make a quick breakfast (heated up in the toaster oven), or easy dinner with a great green salad using your CSA lettuce. We will probably be making more of these, as we have tons of veggies still leftover!

    Sliced Onions

    Caramelized Onion Tart
    - 1 basic pie crust (sans sugar, use your favorite recipe).
    - 4 eggs
    - 3 large onions, thinly sliced (we used all the onions from our share, the one red and two spanish)
    - 1/2 stick of butter
    - 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream
    - salt, pepper & nutmeg to taste

    For Crust (adapted from Williams-Sonoma)

    2 1/2 cups organic all-purpose flour

    1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 lbs. (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch cubes

    6 tablespoons very cold water

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, and salt. Use your fingers to pinch the butter into the flour until all the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks like coarse sand.  Add the water and mix with a spoon just until the dough pulls together.

Combine first 7 ingredients in large bowl. Toss gently to blend.

Roll out 1 dough disk on floured work surface to 13-inch round. Transfer to 9-inch-diameter flass pie dish. Trim excess dough, and flute edges. Place in freezer until filling is ready and oven is preheated to 375 degrees.

    For Filling

Heat olive oil and melt butter over medium low heat in a large pan. Add onions and cook slowly, until slightly golden and starting to caramelize, about half and hour. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg.

Spoon onion evenly into prepared crust.

Whisk eggs and cream together and more salt and pepper to taste. Pour evenly over onions.

Bake until set and golden brown, 30 - 40 minutes. Let rest about 15 - 20 minutes before cutting and serving.

Since my husband doesn't eat cake, the onion tart was the perfect way to wish him a happy birthday too! (happy birthday Jon! are you embarrassed yet?...)

    Jungle Harem Pants, Market Publique

The harem pant is one of the season's biggest trends. We like this vintage one because the shape is less exaggerated, making it easier to pull off. Plus the jungle-floral-and-jaguar-spots printi is just too rad for words. Pair with a cropped cami and nude accessories for summer, then toughen the look up with some fierce black wedge booties, tons of jewelry and a vest for fall.

This horse print skirt is just too adorable for words. Keep it simple with a tank and wedges for summer, and come fall bring on the layers and textures by combining it with cable knits, patterned tights and low shearling clog booties.

Animal Print Silk Top, Market Publique

The animal print is always an essential. And while we love leopard and zebra, we love the unexpected twist on this silk top: black and white dalmatian spots! Pair with a bodycon mini and tons of fringe for your outdoor summer concerts, and transition into fall with black harem pants, statement wedges and tons of bangles.
