  • I never thought the day would come when I would see an original Elizabeth Hawes dress for sale online. But the day has come! And, being a huge Hawes fan, I am thrilled!

Her dresses are so hard to find, since most of them were custom-made for clients, and therefore not only are they fewer of them, but also people don’t usually sell or give away their custom attire.

The seller says the dress and coat were bought at the estate sale of a model that worked for Ms. Hawes.

I love how simple the dress is, with the tailoring and the sleeves being the focal point, and with no frills added: definitely Hawes. The long seams are machine-made but the rest of the seams and the finishing is done by hand, as haute couture demands. And the label looks so timeless! I wish I had $1,500 to drop on this… I sounds like it would fit me too!

Now, if someone just had a picture of those pink gloves she designed that got featured in the Camels ad, I can die happy…

I finished Why is a Dress? right before the holidays and it was amazing! Maybe better than Fashion is Spinach (*gasp*)? Although it wouldn’t have made sense if I hadn’t read Spinach first… I will post some quotes from it here soon.

  • One of the reasons I got into vintage was my dad. He was always on the lookout for strange objects, collectibles and garage sales when we were growing up, and he hasn’t changed a bit since.

The first strange object I fell in love with when I was little was this lamp that looked like hair and lit up at the ends (kinda looked like the picture below). I was not allowed to touch it, because apparently it was fragile and I was also very young. I have a slight suspicion that my mom secretly hated it, and disappeared one day. But I took notice of all the things strange that my dad kept from then on.

More recently, his taste has risen above cheesy 70s fixtures to more, ahem, refined choices. And today, I found a deal on Daily Candy that I know he wouldn’t be able to resist, as it as 25% off from Russel Johnson Imports, a site that I hadn’t heard about before then, but seems tailor-made for my dad. To get the deal, enter ‘dailycandy’ at checkout.

    I know he would love:

  • It’s been snowing a bunch here in New York! It’s definitely a way colder winter than last year’s!

I invested in a pair of Sven Boots last winter, and I adore them! But lately I’ve been feeling an urge to break out of the black (my Sven’s are black, my puffy jacket is black…). And I was thinking, what’s brighter than bright? MOON BOOTS!

I found a few contenders for my foray into flashiness:

  • It’s less than a month away, which means to ensure that you find the perfect outfit and have shipping time to spare, you better get to it! Or, maybe you’re like me and just can’t wait to look for things that are red or heart-shaped… Either way, these are what I’m thinking about:
