Outfit Post - Sunny Winter Day

vintage wool dress the frippey

A sunny winter day in Brooklyn... last week, obviously, since it's been raining for the past couple of days!

Dress, vintage from The Frippery on Market Publique

Necklaces, vintage from Horizons & Circa Now

Earrings, vintage

Tights, unknown

Booties, Steve Madden

Most of the time, I like to keep my outfits simple and fuss-free. A cute dress that fits well, some tights, and high-high heels. Add a few necklaces for a bit of polish.

vintage dress from the frippery

I love this dress because the wild flower print is fabulous, and the colors make it go with a lot - burgundy tights, brown boots, the possibilties are endless. Plus, since is a wool knit it fits like a dream and is super warm and comfortable. I wear it to work all the time, now that I've shortened it a bit (hey, at my height, I have to).

Brass minaudiere necklace from Horizons

The necklaces are some of my favorites. One is a super-mini-minaudiere in brass from Horizons. It opens up to reveal a velvet lining, and you can store tiny treasures in it. My hubby Jon put a Guatemalan worry doll in it, because he says I worry way too much. The legend goes than you tell all your worries to your worry doll, you hide the doll and the doll will leave, carrying your worries with it. Nice idea, right?

The other chains you see are actually one necklace, all attached at the clasp. I got them at Circa Now here in NYC, and they are great because they have the layered look without the effort. Plus the tassel pendants are finished on both sides, so it doesn't matter if they turn over.

Steve Madden booties

I decided to get with these Steve Madden booties after trying them on at the store when my friend Patti was in town. I love that the elastic cinches at the ankle and that they have a hidden platform - it makes them much more comfortable to walk in.

Outfit - Recreating Christmas Day

Outfit for Christmas Day

Dress, vintage from Market Publique

Tights, ShopBop

Shoes, Miu Miu

Bag, vintage from Zola's Everyday Vintage on Market Publique

Earrings, vintage from flea market

Rings, various - read below.

Since I started the outfit posting in the new year, and didn't take the time to take pictures before then, I wanted to recreate my Christmas Day outfit to share with you guys. I love doing 'themed' dressing, how ever dorky that can get; you know: red and green for Christmas, hearts or red for valentine's, red white and blue for Fourth of July. Call it kitchy or not, I love it!

So, for Christmas day, I wore red and green. The best part? I got the red shoes I wanted from my holiday wish list just in time for the big day! Yay! Wouldn't you agree they're to die for? I even like them better than the nude version! And I adore

Hold on tight - a recreation of my New Year's Eve outfit is coming!

Vintage glass earrings

A details of my vintage glass drop earrings. I love these earrings because they are so dramatic, like dangling crystal balls. Plus green is my favorite color!

Miu Miu Backseam Pumps

These Miu Miu backseam pumps had been on my wishlist since August, so I was elated when I got them. They are fabulous, of course, and super, super high – a big plus when you're 5' 1". And polka dot tights make everything better.

Vintage satin bow bag.

The perfect accessory for the outfit was this amazing 60s satin bow clutch I got from Zola's Everyday Vintage. It kept beautifully package with an adorable vintage card, and has a tiny coinpurse inside. You put your hand behind the bow to hold it. How cute is that??!

I've also been wearing a lot more rings lately. The green one is a vintage malachite ring from Erie Basin. The pinky ring was a gift from my dad. My mom and sisters have matching ones, and I think I've had it since I was 15. The tiny gold band on the ring finger is my newest acquisition, and it's a memory ring from Catbird. I love it because it's so unusual, and you're supposed to wear it on your first knuckle.

Luxe Velvet

I adore velvet for winter, because it's not just festive, it's also warm, soft, and cozy. I love it paired with textured tights, with a sequin or rhinestone piece for a nice shiny / matte contrast.

I plan to wear something velvet for New Year's Eve, to stand out in a crowd of metallics and be ready for the hug and kiss at midnight (from my hubby Jon, of course!).

Crème Caramel

The arrival of Fall always has me wearing way more brown than usual (hey, I live in New York, I wear a lot of black!). My favorite shade this season is that deep shade of caramel, so sweet, sticky and delicious, like the caramelized sugar on top of a Crème Caramel, which happens to be one of my favorite desserts.

So, here I go, sharing one of my favorite recipes and a few of my favorite caramel vintage picks to go with it:

Crème Caramel

adapted from Williams-Sonoma

for the caramel:

3/4 c. sugar

3 tbs. water

for the custard:

1 1/2 c. organic whole milk

1 1/2 c. organic heavy cream

1/2 c. sugar

3 whole eggs, plus 3 egg yolks (eggs are the star here, so get the best you can find: organic free-range eggs.

1 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Farenheit.  Arrange 8 small ramekins in a baking pan. Boil water in a kettle.

2. Make the caramel: combine sugar and water in a heavy saucepan over high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Bring to a boil, then cook without stirring until sugar turns a caramel brown, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat and pour a bit into each ramekin, swirling the cup to cover the bottom evenly.

3. Make the custard: Mix the milk, cream and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar, until small bubbles form a the edge of the pan.  In a separate bowl, combine the eggs and egg yolks and whisk to mix. In a small stream, add the milk slowly to the eggs, whisking constantly.

4. Pour the custard into the caramel-filled ramekins.

5. Pour boiling water into the baking pan, around the ramekins to create a water bath and help the custard cook evenly. Cover the pan with foil and bake about 50 minutes.

6. Remove from oven and place the ramekins in the fridge to cool for at least 3 hours or up to 2 days.

7. To serve, dip each ramekin into boiling water for a few seconds. Then set the ramekin on the counter and slip a knife all around the edge. Place the dessert plate upside-down on top of the ramekin and hold together while you invert. Voilá!

Pop of Pink

vintage pink 60s mini dress outfit

I am feeling a deep need for color these days... While I don't usually don't wear pink, I thought this dress was so cute I would wear it. Of course, it would have to be paired with the right accessories. For me, that means toughening up the pink with contrasting black and a rainbow of other colors. I'm thinking this outfit can really make an entrance and put a smile on your face as you walk out the door...
