Presenting at the NY Tech Meetup was exhilarating! We were nervous to demo in front of the 800+ crowd, but we think we did pretty great (and we had a TON of fun!). Judge for yourself by watching our presentation on Livestream, above. We especially liked the Q&A session, when someone asked - "Why should I join your site?" and we responded: "Because it's awesome..."
We were honored to present with other amazing New York City-based startups including: Eventros, Turnto, Indaba, Twilio, Philo and Texai. (Plus a sneak peek at new features from Bing). The experience was mind-blowing, especially when Twilio live-coded PHP on stage, then had a phone conference on the fly with the entire Skirball audience. Mind blowing.
Also, check out what the blogosphere is saying about our demo:
"Market Publique: What Etsy was for DIY: Market Publique is a website for vintage clothing vendors to sell their goods all in one place. Vendors go through an extensive process with the site's executive board to make sure the clothes are legit, and are offered better, uniform technology to photograph and showcase their pieces in a more appealing manner than a personal website. MP takes 5% commission, but the aggregated traffic couldn't hurt."
"Market Publique: Long Tail Application’s Win
Market Publique is an excellent example of a “long tail” strategy, coupled with a passionate entrepreneur. It’s a winner. It carves out a nice clean market from the “head” of the long tail, or the established market leaders in the category. In this case the category is person-to-person online sales, like eBay. Market Publique adopts an already well-understood methods from online stores and then applies it to vintage clothing. There is no learning curve for the new user; they simply see eBay on steroids for vintage clothes – if vintage clothes are your thing, you’re sucked in. The site offers sophistication unique to vintage clothes, a personal vetting process for sellers (“no Dudes”) and superior product presentation. All of these simple features are beyond what generalists like eBay could offer. Market Publique is a simple retail play and potential big winner."
"A shopping site for vintage clothing with an exclusivity clause: sellers are vetted to make sure their clothing is vintage enough and their photographs of merchandise are attractive enough."
I was lucky enough to be invited to participate, and just got luckier by being mentioned in WWD.com with the rest of the participants. Be sure to check out the whole she-bang, as all the outfits are fabulous!
I loved the inpiration photos, the items they picked from Market Publique and most of all, the thought of a 4th grader running up and yelling: "It doesn't go!".
We're loving the trend posts that Holier Than Now has been doing lately, and are so excited to be featured again - this time via some capes from The Frippery.
We were thrilled to find some of our vintage dresses featured on Holier Than Now, as vintage versions of the Batik trend, which was seen in full force at the Mara Hoff Man runways. Even better: this Sping wislist of the trends is part of a series! Can't wait to see more!
We are so excited for tomorrow's Chictopia 10: Social Influence Summit. Market Publique is sponsoring the event, and I will be in attendance, of course. Wouldn't miss it for the world!
