Jungle Harem Pants, Market Publique

The harem pant is one of the season's biggest trends. We like this vintage one because the shape is less exaggerated, making it easier to pull off. Plus the jungle-floral-and-jaguar-spots printi is just too rad for words. Pair with a cropped cami and nude accessories for summer, then toughen the look up with some fierce black wedge booties, tons of jewelry and a vest for fall.

Horse Print Skirt, Market Publique

This horse print skirt is just too adorable for words. Keep it simple with a tank and wedges for summer, and come fall bring on the layers and textures by combining it with cable knits, patterned tights and low shearling clog booties.

Animal Print Silk Top, Market Publique

The animal print is always an essential. And while we love leopard and zebra, we love the unexpected twist on this silk top: black and white dalmatian spots! Pair with a bodycon mini and tons of fringe for your outdoor summer concerts, and transition into fall with black harem pants, statement wedges and tons of bangles.

Vintage by the Sea - Our favorite nautical finds

Summer is in full force, and there's nothing we love more than breezy nautical style when the weather is this hot. Anything with white, blue, red, gold or rope accents that reminds me of the beach makes the heat way more bearable, even when walking down the steamy streets of Manhattan.

So transport yourself to a sandy state of mind with some of our favorite vintage nautical finds. We also recommend hydrating with some Khiels lotion in Coconut, as the smell is beachy and delicious but not suntan lotion-y, but hurry, rumor has it they're discounting that scent...

Behind the Scenes - The Prop Pie for our shoot featuring ModCloth & Idée Geniale

ModCloth + Market Publique Collaboration

An photo from our collaboration with ModCloth & Idée Geniale. Photography by Kate Sims.

One of my favorite things about fashion editorials is imagining what happened behind the scenes, and getting to see how it all came together. Oftentimes, the process is just as interesting, if not more, than the results. So let me show you a tiny piece of the behind the scenes from our Beach Betty Lookbook: The prop pie! Scroll down to get the recipe too.

Baking a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

I went to the store to get groceries for dinner and saw rhubarb, which is in season, and thought - I should make a pie! So I bought some and got to work.

Baking a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

I decided to make strawberry rhubarb pie (my favorite!), and took out my vintage pie dish, appropriately decorated with painted strawberries and a recipe.

Baking a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

I used organic flour and cultured butter for a yummy crust - no Crisco for me!

The fruit wasn't cooked beforehand, making it an easy recipe.

The hard part is making the lattice top... I haven't quite mastered the task, so if you look quite closely, it's not really over-under-over-under... but I think that's makes it look homemade, all the little imperfections.

And here's Mel, adorably dressed in the Beauty on a Bicycle Dress which we accessorized with my vintage tricycle and, of course, pie! The pie was consumed by all non-vegans around us after the shoot. Yum!

STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE

For Crust (adapted from Williams-Sonoma)

2 1/2 cups organic all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 lbs. (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch cubes

6 tablespoons very cold water

For Filling (adapted from Epicurious)

3 1/2 cups 1/2-inch-thick slices trimmed rhubarb (1 1/2 pounds untrimmed)

1 16-ounce container strawberries, hulled, halved (about 3 1/2 cups)

1/2 cup golden brown sugar

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 400°F.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, and salt. Use your fingers to pinch the butter into the flour until all the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks like coarse sand.  Add the water and mix with a spoon just until the dough pulls together.

Combine first 7 ingredients in large bowl. Toss gently to blend.

Roll out 1 dough disk on floured work surface to 13-inch round. Transfer to 9-inch-diameter flass pie dish. Trim excess dough, leaving 3/4-inch overhang.

Roll out second dough disk on lightly floured surface to 13-inch round. Cut into fourteen 1/2-inch-wide strips. Spoon filling into crust. Arrange 7 dough strips atop filling, spacing evenly. Form lattice by placing remaining dough strips in opposite direction atop filling. Trim ends of dough strips even with overhang of bottom crust. Fold strip ends and overhang under, pressing to seal. Crimp edges decoratively.

Brush glaze over crust. transfer pie to baking sheet. Bake 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F. Bake pie until golden and filling thickens, about 1 hour 25 minutes. Transfer pie to rack and cool completely. Eat!

Spring & Summer Outfit Recipes

We're really excited for the warm weather, and have been planning outfits in our head for weeks. Here's a few of the options we came up with, all with vintage from Market Publique.

Who says you can't wear vintage head to toe?  Follow our recipe for success: the trick is to mix eras, and keep color paletters and textures on the same page. Add your own sunglasses and head outside!

Proper in Plaid Outfit

Proper Plaids

Ingredients

- Vintage Paul Stuart Dress, Jen Fitch Style

- Vintage Reconstructed Pocket Watch Necklace, Corvus Noir

- Vintage Bottega Veneta Bucke Bag, Dusty Rose Vintage

- Vintage Woven Peeptoe Pumps, Miskabelle

Directions

We loved this plaid dress from Jen Fitch Style. It's looks like it could be from Steven Alan circa now, but it's really from the 80s! The wooden buttons are especially adorable, as is the flirty bubble hem. We decided to pair these with woven accessories to echo the plaid print, and the green rosary beads in the Corvus Noir necklace tied the look together.

Vintage Striped Romper

Apple of My Eye

Ingredients

- 60s Striped Blue Romper, The Frippery

- Vintage Sarah Coventry Apple Earrings, Market Publique House Store

- Vintage Anne Klein Bag, Strim Vintage

- Vintage Perforated Wedges, Le Proust Vintage

Directions

When we saw this romper, we almost bought it and headed to the Hampton Jitney! We loved how The Frippery paired it with a red bow belt, so we added some red accessories and what do you think when you think red? APPLES! Voilá - top with apple earrings.

Rainbow Brite

Rainbow Bright

- Christian Dior Black Blouse, Amarcord

- Armani Denim Skirt, Amarcord

- Vintage Rainbow Belt, Amarcord

- Triple Fish Necklace, Market Publique House Store

- Coach Mini Station Bag, Jen Fitch Style

- Red Huarache Flats, Sweet Virginia

We love livening up basics (i.e. denim & black top), with bright accessories. Amarcord added its own vintage rainbow woven belt, and we echoed the woven colors in these red huaraches from Sweet Virginia. For a whimsical touch, try the three fish necklace.

Peachy Keen

Ingredients

- Cacharel Floral Maxi Dress, Jen Fitch Style

- Vintage Reconstructed Multi-Chain and Bow Necklace, Clyde's Rebirth

- Cream Clutch, Market Publique House Store

- Brown Woven Huarache Sandals, Sweet Virginia

Directions

There's nothing more essential for spring than a breezy floral cotton dress. We love the blush tone-on-tone florals of this Cacharel dress, so we kept the look simple with classic multi-chain necklace livened up with peach bows, a crisp cream clutch and basic brown huarache sandals.
