Take the L train to Bedford Avenue. When you exit, walk north 3 blocks to North 10th. If you're on Bedford, turn right. If you're on Driggs, turn left. The bulding is about halfway down the block, on the North side of the street.
P.S. It's my birthday on the 9th, so I'll be celebrating my birthday too! Please come toast with me and some bubbly!
Presenting at the NY Tech Meetup was exhilarating! We were nervous to demo in front of the 800+ crowd, but we think we did pretty great (and we had a TON of fun!). Judge for yourself by watching our presentation on Livestream, above. We especially liked the Q&A session, when someone asked - "Why should I join your site?" and we responded: "Because it's awesome..."
We were honored to present with other amazing New York City-based startups including: Eventros, Turnto, Indaba, Twilio, Philo and Texai. (Plus a sneak peek at new features from Bing). The experience was mind-blowing, especially when Twilio live-coded PHP on stage, then had a phone conference on the fly with the entire Skirball audience. Mind blowing.
Also, check out what the blogosphere is saying about our demo:
"Market Publique: What Etsy was for DIY: Market Publique is a website for vintage clothing vendors to sell their goods all in one place. Vendors go through an extensive process with the site's executive board to make sure the clothes are legit, and are offered better, uniform technology to photograph and showcase their pieces in a more appealing manner than a personal website. MP takes 5% commission, but the aggregated traffic couldn't hurt."
"Market Publique: Long Tail Application’s Win
Market Publique is an excellent example of a “long tail” strategy, coupled with a passionate entrepreneur. It’s a winner. It carves out a nice clean market from the “head” of the long tail, or the established market leaders in the category. In this case the category is person-to-person online sales, like eBay. Market Publique adopts an already well-understood methods from online stores and then applies it to vintage clothing. There is no learning curve for the new user; they simply see eBay on steroids for vintage clothes – if vintage clothes are your thing, you’re sucked in. The site offers sophistication unique to vintage clothes, a personal vetting process for sellers (“no Dudes”) and superior product presentation. All of these simple features are beyond what generalists like eBay could offer. Market Publique is a simple retail play and potential big winner."
"A shopping site for vintage clothing with an exclusivity clause: sellers are vetted to make sure their clothing is vintage enough and their photographs of merchandise are attractive enough."
We're honored– and a little bit nervous– to be part of the biggest technology Meetup in NYC! Join us tomorrow as we demo Market Publique in all it's live-site glory in front of 800 of New York City's most cutting-edge crowds.
They just opened up a few more spots for Market Publique fans to RSVP, and the last 50 spots will be released tomorrow morning, so hurry up and RSVP so you don't miss out. There will be tons of great startups there, along with VCs, press, and NY Techies, with networking to follow the demos.
Every gal knows about the versatility of the Little Black Dress. And designer Eliza Starbuck of Bright Young Things is taking it to the next level.
You may remember Eliza's signature black dress from the year-round styling experiment, fundraiser and all-around awesome blog The Uniform Project. The year may be over, but the impact of that little black dress is continuing and spreading to other stylish gals.
Tonight I am heading to Cobblestones Vintage to style the infamous black dress for a Style Challenger.
We will style the signature black dress with our own items plus vintage from Cobblestones. Then, a panel of glamourous style icons will judge our outfit, including the fashion designers behind Vena Cava, Lisa Mayock & Sophie Buhai, Delanie Koppersmith of Cobblestones, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann, fashion designer Chris Benz, and singer, Eleanor Friedberger from the Fiery Furnaces.
Don't worry– you can vote too! Starting Wednesday, you'll be able to see the entries on the Bright Young Things Facebook page, vote for your favorites and even be entered to win your very own Bright Young Things little black dress!
A snapshot of soon-to-be-gone LES darling, Marmalade Vintage
Another vintage store gets pushed out of the gentrified LES, and this time the hurt is deeper.
One of my favorite vintage stores, and I think the first one I ever shopped at in New York, Marmalade Vintage is succumbing to the escalating rents. Gone will be the days of stopping by for an accessory before heading for a terrine at Pink Pony and drinks at Max Fish. Gone will be the days of going through their colorful racks of vintage clothes and trying on a rainbow of shoes. And one more store is removed from my LES vintage Saturday shopping circuit - Marmalade, Girls Love Shoes, Daha, Shop, Foley & Corinna, Edith Machinist... before a rest stop at 'inoteca.
I know Marmalade is not gone forever, and will emerge strong, bringing us even more carefully curated pieces at TG-170 and online (coming soon), but it does feel like the end of an era: the store was a LES staple for 11 years. It breaks my heart to think what will go in its space- another Steve Madden? A Madewell store? Let's just hope its an independent seller instead of a big corporate chain.
But put your woes aside for a minute and help Marmalade go out with a bang:
They will be having a 'Last Days on Ludlow' sale through July 26, with Summer dresses, rompers and shorts many under $30.
I went into Manhattan today for some work meeting and other projects I have going on in the city, including some design consulting, so I decided to dress appropriate for 'the office' but also with some edge, because after all, this is New York City. I mixed in some of my signature vintage accessories to keep the look true to my style.
And, my Jerome Dreyfuss makes its debut on the blog! I've had it for a couple months, and it has not left my side since I got it. I love how inmense it is– I can carry my entire apartment in it, including a change of shoes, makeup bag, huge wallet, cellphone, keys, extra tote bag (not that I needed it)... you name it! Because when I'm gone for the whole day I really need to have all my stuff with me, just in case. The best part? The tiny little LED flashlight that is the Dreyfuss signature makes find anything in my bag a cinch! LOVE it.
Jon took this pic with my iPhone, and captured the sunset behind me just right! Thanks Jon!
A detail of an amazing Buddha necklace by Pauline Rader I got at Amarcord, plus my new woven leather wedges from Zara
I visited Zara recently and went on a spree, as you can probably tell... I usually don't go to 'fast fashion' stores because I feel clothes should last for many seasons and be produced in a sustainable way, but I have to admit I did find quite a few gems when I was there. The blouse is silk charmeuse and the shoes are genuine leather, plus the seams are all straight, which is more that you can say from many of the fast fashion chains. Oh well, as long as it doesn't become a habit... The shoes already paid for themselves after a certain Creative Director from a major beauty company complimented them in the hallway. Making an impression is always good!

This swap is unlike any other swap you've ever been to. Why? Because you will get choice items from cool nyc peeps, and we'll do the sorting for you!
If you didn't make it to the last one, you are seriously missing out - check out what Huffington Post, PSFK, and Brooklyn Courier had to say!
The swap will be divided into many categories / departments, and Market Publique will be curating the Clothing & Accessories one. So fret not - stained and holey tees plus flammable flourescent polyester won't make it in. What will? Think adorable dresses, shorts, tops and tons of accessories to update your wardrobe. Along with picking out the best of the rest, we'll also be offering styling advice and tips.
How it works: Attendees bring their old clothes, music, books, etc, to the event and drop them at the door. Volunteers sort and distribute these items to themed departments where professional curators organize them into boutique-like displays. Attendees have the option to browse each department and take as much as they can carry! Meanwhile, DJs keep the party poppin’, artists silkscreen custom tote bags, and more. Once you have scored a new oufit, get it photographed by one of our professional photographers and show it off!
